Making Peace with Your Past - Accepting God's Grace
Tuesday, November 21, 2023 by Whitney Winkleman, Certified Christian Life Coach

There were moments in my life where I missed the mark and fell short of my potential and in my decision making. This caused some major heartache to myself and those around me at the time. I used to walk around with a heavy weight on my shoulders, constantly reminding myself of the bad choices I made; sometimes beating myself up because I knew better but did it (sin) anyway. Do you ever feel like this, struggling so much to let go of what you did in the past? Maybe you know you are a different person now from who you were back then, but you find yourself disgusted with the “person” you were or what you used to do.

Being around Christian believers most of my life, I knew what Jesus did for me on the cross and why he chose to do what he did. However, I allowed myself to get so caught up in my own “pity party” I started to assume I was the exception – my sins were so bad that even Jesus’ blood wasn’t enough to cover them. I was stuck in believing what the “world” said about me, “You messed up too much” or “Your sin is too great.” I used to think, “Yes, Jesus died for my sins, but my sins are too bad…after all, I knew right from wrong and still chose wrong. He didn’t deserve to die for what I did; God won’t forgive me.” Do not allow yourself to fall into that cognitive trap by believing these lies. God the Father allowed His own Son to take the weight and punishment for ALL YOUR sin because He loves you and wants a relationship with you. It took me a long time to escape from my self-sabotaging mindset. The struggle of accepting my past and moving forward was a very difficult process and one of the hardest things I have had to do. Experiencing the grace of God and accepting how freely He gave it to me is what really changed my heart and mind.

Once I understood the Gospel, I had a choice to make. I could continue the exhausting cycle of trying to make up for all my sins on my own – which wasn’t working for me, or I had to believe and accept the truth that Jesus paid the penalty for my sin by his death on the cross and resurrected from the dead to demonstrate his victory over the sin, thereby giving me victory over it. Given the options, I chose to accept His forgiveness and grace! Incidentally, grace is the undeserved gift that God freely gives to us - which is Jesus Christ. His death is the greatest example of grace throughout the bible! There is only one way to God and that is through Jesus. Like me, you may need to let go of your past by choosing to accept the truth of His forgiveness.

Are you ready for the truth of God’s grace and forgiveness to set you free of the self-sabotaging lies?

Give your life and your past to Jesus. He knows what to do with it. Perhaps we can help.

We provide help today so you can have hope for tomorrow.

John 1:16-17 - “Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness, for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (Holman Version)

John 14:6 - “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (Holman Version)
